Telephone Fraud

Telephone misuse and fraud is about…and it can happen most easily with a reverse charge call.

In terms of misuse, William Tys, CEO of 1800 PHONEHOME says “…when you receive a reverse charge call, the bottom line is, do not press any phone keys or say anything until you are 100% sure that you know who is calling!”

Tys says that the acceptance of a reverse charge call is either voice or key pad activated. In other words the facility will read that you accepted the call either by saying a word or pressing a key on your phone. “The voice activation is a bit suspect” says Tys, “as background noise can sometimes be taken as an acceptance signal whereas by pressing a key there is no doubt and it is clear and positive and very unlikely to be accidental.”

Tys says the 1800 PHONEHOME facility is clear and positive. The system clearly identifies itself to the receiving party (Party B) and  indicates that there is a reverse charge call from a Party A (here the calling party is expected to say their name which happens when Party A is initiating the call). If the caller does not say their name when making the call, Party B will not know who the call is from and at this point Party B should be a little suspect and perhaps not accept the call. If you are suspicious you can simply hang up knowing that if the call is necessary and urgent Party A will call again.

There are the obvious prank calls and then there is out and out fraud. In the UK a scam netted significant funds when “apparent” reverse charge calls were placed to fixed lines with a voice activated response.

Tys knows of no such scams in Australia and doubts that any respectable service would be involved in any such activity.

Would you accept a reverse charge call ……?

Author: admin  //  Category: reverse charge calls

from a cousin (twice removed) stranded in Tierra Del Fuego ??

yes

Can a company charge you for answering a phone call from them?

Author: admin  //  Category: reverse charge calls

Fair enough you can be charged for reverse call charges and for answering a caller from abroad but can a company calling YOU sneak any extra charges on you without you knowing. Anyone ever experienced this?

I have never heard of this in the UK except in cases where you pick it up and there is an answer phone message on the end (in which case if you put it down straight away you shouldnt be charged) - but we do have sneaky companies who use SMS or text messages to charge you. Also in the UK we have the TPS (Telephone Preference Service or something) which you can register on for free and then no one should ring you.

Reverse Charge Calling… A Premium Service

Author: admin  //  Category: reverse call, reverse calls, reverse charge, reverse charge call, reverse charges

A reverse charge call facility is a premium service. That is why you pay a little more for a reverse charge call than if you used your own phone.

Take the following examples of obvious premium services. A ride in a taxi is a premium service. You could take the bus but you need to get to your appointment on time…so you take a cab. And because you use this premium service you pay more to get to your destination than if you decided to use your own car or took the bus.

Another example is a toll road. Sure you can go through twenty sets of lights and stop and start and take an hour and a half to get to you where you are going ….but if you take the toll road then you get there in ten minutes and no stress…but you have to pay the ten bucks to use the toll road. Same as the taxi, the toll road is a premium service.

Usually people who set up premium services of any kind have invested in infrastructure,  equipment or resources and they need to get a return on their investment as well as providing a well regarded service to the community.

Reverse charge call operators do the same. There is a significant amount of investment in time and dollars that go into setting up a reverse charge call facility…and it’s a premium service.

A reverse charge call is not like a regular call. A regular call is one way…from Party A to Party B. There are several parts to a reverse charge call. Party A calls a reverse charge service and enters the number he or she wants. This is checked by the management platform. Party A then identifies himself or herself. The call goes to the management platform and from there the Party B number is dialled. Identification and acceptance takes place at the Party B end and then that information goes back to the management platform where the parties are connected. This solutions or telephony architecture is much more complicated than a one way call. Inbound and outbound charges are levied against the operator, billing solutions attract telecom fees and platform management fees are paid. If party B does not accept the call, the costs are directly borne by the operator.

So…a reverse charge call facility is certainly a premium service and when the situation is urgent and necessary how happy are you when you know the number of a reverse charge call service so you can make a call to get assistance. How happy are you when your children know the number to call so they are always in touch…day or night!

Reverse Charge Calls In Australia

Author: admin  //  Category: reverse call, reverse calls, reverse charge, reverse charge call, reverse charge calls, reverse charges

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

1800 PhoneHome is a new reverse charge call service facilitating reverse charge calls to mobiles and fixed lines. The service is Australia wide and has been operating for nearly two years. 1800 PhoneHome has competitive rates which may be viewed on the website. The service is easy to use and adds to the number of reverse charge call operators in Australia thereby stimulating competition in this industry.

In Australia, from just about any phone (mobile, fixed and payphone) simply dial the toll-free prefix 1800 and then dial the alpha numeric representation PHONEHOME. The number is therefore 1800 746634.

Options For Staying In Touch

Author: admin  //  Category: Uncategorized

A long time ago we stayed in touch by tom tom or smoke signals perhaps! More recently it was a letter by Cobb and Co. and then Morse code.

Now we have public phones activated by coins or phone cards, private fixed lines, mobile phones, email, video phone, fax, VOiP etc. There are probably many more available options.

But the question, posed by William Tys, CEO of 1800 PHONEHOME is “Why do we need reverse charge call services? Would not a person have access to a least one of the above methods to contact someone in an urgent situation? Would they not have a mobile phone, a phone card or some coins to make a call from a telephone box? Apparently not!”

With the best planning we can still get caught out without a means to contact someone in an urgent or necessary situation. An example could perhaps be a school child, at a bus stop who has not been picked up, as he usually is, by his mother. He needs to call someone. Another is an adult who has a mobile, but the battery is flat. He also has a flat tyre outside a supermarket. That person needs to call someone.

And believe it or not, some people just don’t have a (mobile) phone and therefore use a reverse charge call service to make their calls. If their financial status demands this type of behaviour then that is one way to stay in touch. That person just makes necessary calls and does not use reverse charge calls to chat and gossip.

Furthermore, someone who does not want to buy a mobile for their child, a reverse charge call provider with competitive rates can be a cheaper alternative than buying a phone and paying rental and calls. If a poll was run to find out all the situations and reasons that could arise for making reverse charge calls, those situations would be numerous.

Reverse charge call facilities are a premium service and more expensive than using the more regular type facilities. Nevertheless, they are a useful and necessary community service.
