A reverse charge call facility is a premium service. That is why you pay a little more for a reverse charge call than if you used your own phone.
Take the following examples of obvious premium services. A ride in a taxi is a premium service. You could take the bus but you need to get to your appointment on time…so you take a cab. And because you use this premium service you pay more to get to your destination than if you decided to use your own car or took the bus.
Another example is a toll road. Sure you can go through twenty sets of lights and stop and start and take an hour and a half to get to you where you are going ….but if you take the toll road then you get there in ten minutes and no stress…but you have to pay the ten bucks to use the toll road. Same as the taxi, the toll road is a premium service.
Usually people who set up premium services of any kind have invested in infrastructure, equipment or resources and they need to get a return on their investment as well as providing a well regarded service to the community.
Reverse charge call operators do the same. There is a significant amount of investment in time and dollars that go into setting up a reverse charge call facility…and it’s a premium service.
A reverse charge call is not like a regular call. A regular call is one way…from Party A to Party B. There are several parts to a reverse charge call. Party A calls a reverse charge service and enters the number he or she wants. This is checked by the management platform. Party A then identifies himself or herself. The call goes to the management platform and from there the Party B number is dialled. Identification and acceptance takes place at the Party B end and then that information goes back to the management platform where the parties are connected. This solutions or telephony architecture is much more complicated than a one way call. Inbound and outbound charges are levied against the operator, billing solutions attract telecom fees and platform management fees are paid. If party B does not accept the call, the costs are directly borne by the operator.
So…a reverse charge call facility is certainly a premium service and when the situation is urgent and necessary how happy are you when you know the number of a reverse charge call service so you can make a call to get assistance. How happy are you when your children know the number to call so they are always in touch…day or night!

My daughter keeps receiving texts from 08000mumdad stating that she has received reverse charge calls from people using their service. Upon opening each text her phone credit has been automatically debited by £2.50. She is adamant that she has not received any of these calls. I have been on their website and have emailed them (no response) and tried to phone them countless times (no reply operators are busy !!!). Is this a scam ??? How can I stop these texts ???
Thanks for the advise everyone. I have just been in touch with the service provider and they were really helpful. It looks like this has been set up maliciously on the 08000mumdad web page, anyone can do it providing they know someone's phone number and details. I am really disgusted with this and wonder whether I should contact trading standards. The owner of this site must be coining it in. They have given me an email address and I have to say 'stop' and they are legally obliged to cancel this 'service' . I seriously would like to get my hands on the b******'s and whoever set it up!!
reply with "STOP" in the message (minus the quotes). This is a national thing and by law companies must opt you out if you reply like this.
To refund the money you have lost you would be best off phoning your service provider if you can't get through to the company and see what they have to say.
Not opening the texts won't stop you getting charged as the answer below suggests by the way!!

I have already posted a question asking if this mobile service is a scam. I followed up on the advise given but my daughter is still receiving these texts that debit money from her phone as they proport to be charges for reverse charge calls that she has supposedly received.She has never received any such calls and up to now has lost around £20 - £30 to this scam. I have written to the firm, reported them to Trading Standards, sent reply texts saying stop but they won't stop. Even deleting the text without opening it does not stop money being debited. I rang Virgin but they were a bit airy fairy about the situation - likening it to one of those subscriber services where you download ringtones etc - this isn't like that as my daughter has never subscribed to this service or any other. I don't see why she should have to change her mobile number to resolve this and am determined to fight back. Can anyone offer any further advise please.

Well if its a pay as you go phone then just dont top up the sim card anymore. Get a new one & a new number!
