What about Telstra and Optus? Well…Telstra and Optus have phone numbers…not phonenames. That doesn’t really matter except who can remember numbers these days with the successful onslaught of phonenames like 1800 Reverse and 1800 PHONEHOME.
 
What about other 1800 reverse charge call phonename operators like 1800 Mumdad and 1800 Nocredit. Again, they have phonenames but do not offer the full service of reverse charge calls to mobiles AND fixed lines.

1800 Reverse and 1800 PHONEHOME ultimately terminate and conduct the reverse charge calls to the fixed line on the fixed line… and that’s the way it should be!
 
Bottom line is of course, out of 1800 Reverse and 1800 PHONEHOME, which service provider gives the best deal to its customers. Absolutely no contest here…1800 PHONEHOME wins hands down!

Some brief history

1. Telstra (and its predecessors) was the only reverse charge call operator in Australia up until around 2000. A typical reverse charge call was from a Telstra payphone to a Telstra fixed home phone.  This was in keeping with the nature of these calls being by persons in urgent need to contact someone, and not being in a position to pay for a phone call.  
2. Most people were, and still are aware of the Telstra reverse charge call service, where children and others can avail themselves of a Telstra payphone and call home in an emergency without having to make a payment in a phone booth. 
3. Telstra is required under its Universal Service Obligation (USO) to maintain a certain number of payphones nationwide. However, due to the high cost of maintenance and the high ownership of mobile phones, Telstra has understandably reduced payphone numbers in past years.  Moreover, it can be expected that reductions in numbers will continue for those reasons. 
4. With regard to the rates charged by Telstra to the calling party for reverse calls, these were uniform and reasonable.  The process that the calling party had to follow in making a reverse charge call was also simple to follow.
5. The situation today in the reverse charge call industry is markedly different and change is on the way.
